A Changing China: Economic and Political Reforms in Recent Years

The University of Oregon is pleased to announce an opportunity for two UO students to study on the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU)* Undergraduate Summer Program at Fudan University in Shanghai, China. This two-week summer program (from July 16 -29, 2007) will include Chinese language courses and lectures on Chinese political and economic reforms. The program will also include a group seminar and excursions.
A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to each of the students selected to participate thanks to generous support from International Affairs, East Asian Languages and Literatures, the Center for Applied Second Language Studies, Asian Studies and the Center for Asian and Pacific Studies. Fudan University will cover most onsite expenses. However, each participant will be required to pay a $150 fee upon arrival to help cover some of the accommodation, local travel and field trip expenses. Students are also responsible for covering food and other miscellaneous expenses (an estimated $250 for the two-week program).
Eligibility: This program is open to degree-seeking undergraduates who have maintained a 3.5 GPA or higher. Preference will be given to students who have junior status (90 credit hours) by the end of spring term 2007. Students are required to work with a UO faculty member to receive independent study credit for the program.
Selection Process: Applications are due to Terri Gureno in International Affairs (330 Oregon Hall) by 5 p.m. Monday, May 4, 2007. A committee appointed by International Affairs will review the applications and make a recommendation to the University of Oregon APRU Senior Staff Representative. The final selection of the two UO scholarship recipients will be made by May 18, 2007.
Application Process: Students must submit the following:
1. Application cover sheet (attached)—original plus four copies
2. Narrative statement (limited to 1,000 words) discussing the following:
What is your interest in China and how would this program further your academic and career goals—original plus four copies
3. Letter of recommendation from a UO faculty member who is familiar with your academic work and willing to oversee independent study credit for your participation in the program.
