While Liberal Arts degrees produce some of our most diverse graduates with possible careers in almost any field, it is often easy to feel lost when “the world is your oyster.” While finding your niche can be a challenge, people with Liberal Arts degrees often find themselves in surprising careers. Join us as the UO Career Center brings a panel of professionals who know the unimagined success of a Liberal Arts degree to campus!

Our program will feature remarks by Scott Coltrane, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and Larry Singell, associate dean of Social Sciences. The panel discussion will include five recent University of Oregon graduates from Social Science majors:

  • Shawn Halsey (2001, Political Science), emergency management communications coordinator, Umatilla County
  • Amy Lodholz (2005, Environmental Studies), event and volunteer coordinator, A.C. Newberg Area Habitat for Humanity
  • Jennifer Matteson (1992, International Studies), course developer, Xerox
  • Carmen Rubio (2007, Political Science), executive director, Latino Network
  • Todd Werdebaugh (1990, Political Science), director of sales, 20th Century Fox Entertainment

These professionals will discuss their experiences in getting to their current positions and give valuable advice from what they have learned along the way. The discussion will help answer questions, ground expectations, and demonstrate that a path based on the pursuit of growth and learning will help you realize your goals, even if your first job is not necessarily your dream job.
