Resources for Exploring Majors

Now that I know the names of some majors, how do I research what they are about?

 

Read...
...the University Catalog. It provides information about the content of the major, the requirements of the major, and a list of course descriptions related to the major. You can access the catalog through the UO website. ...titles of texts in the bookstore. Choose a major that interests you and scan the book titles required for the courses. Are these books you would find interesting? ...books from the Career Center library, which includes the series: Great Jobs for ______ (e.g. History) Majors. The library is located on the 2nd floor of Hendricks Hall. Or, read about majors on-line through the Career Information System (CIS) which can be accessed through UO-JobLink at uocareer.uoregon.edu.
Talk with...
...faculty and graduate students in the majors that are of interest to you. Drop-in during office hours or call the department for more information. Examples of questions you might ask a professor include (but are not limited to): Why did you choose this field? What is your favorite question you get to ask as a ________ (e.g. Sociologist)? What kinds of research are you currently involved in? ...department peer advisors. These undergraduate students work in their major's department and are trained to assist fellow students with academic requirements. Ask individual departments if they have peer advisors to assist you. ...friends and family members that can give you some information on specific majors – maybe using their own personal experience with those subjects. Ask!
