Spring 2008

Thank you for taking time to visit the University of Oregon Peace Corps office website. I hope that the information provided will answer your questions or guide you in the right direction. Hosted by the University of Oregon Career Center, we work to promote Peace Corps program opportunities and to recruit qualified volunteers possessing the appropriate skills and motivation to succeed as Peace Corps volunteers.

What is the Peace Corps?

The Peace Corps traces its roots and mission to 1960, when then Senator John F. Kennedy challenged students at the University of Michigan to serve their country in the cause of peace by living and working in developing countries. From that inspiration grew an agency of the federal government devoted to world peace and friendship. Since that time, more than 182,000 Peace Corps Volunteers have been invited by 138 host countries to work on issues ranging from AIDS education to information technology and environmental preservation.

Today's Peace Corps is more vital than ever, working in emerging and essential areas such as information technology and business development, and committing more than 1,000 new Volunteers as a part of the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. Peace Corps Volunteers continue to help countless individuals who want to build a better life for themselves, their children, and their communities.

The Peace Corps' mission has three simple goals:

  1. Helping the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women.
  2. Helping promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served.
  3. Helping promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans.

The University of Oregon is a top Peace Corps Volunteer-producing institution. Currently, it ranks 10th in the nation with 67 graduates currently serving in the field. Since 1961, almost 2,000 graduates have served in the Peace Corps.

As the campus representative and a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer, I am here to help answer any questions that you may have about the application process, serving as a volunteer, security and safety issues and more. Please stop by my office during office hours, schedule an appointment or attend one of our local events.

Sincerely,
